Today the pilot project to use performing arts as a tool in combating racism in school environments took place in Koivusaaren koulu in collaboration with Ely-keskus/ Etnisten suhteiden neuvottelukunta, Ministry of Justice and Taike.
A 20 minutes dance piece choreographed and interpreted by @ndjaradancecompany and Elina Valtonen was presented and 400 students were the first audience.

Welcome to this Free dance exploration about my new production “Shift”, that will be premiered @tanssintalo on 15.12.

SHIFT is a captivating and thought-provoking Afro contemporary dance performance that embodies and explores the profound transformations occurring in ecological, social, and psychological landscapes.
Through a fusion of movement, music, and visual storytelling, SHIFT unravels the changes brought about by climate change, emphasizing the intricate relationships between nature, humanity, and the ever-shifting currents of our world.

Part one:
Shifts in ecological communities

Changes in resources and environmental conditions force species to alter their behavior, routes, and distributions. While some species, such as plants and fungi, are able to move, their shift occurs gradually over generations.

Mismatches in timings and phenological mismatches between organisms dependent on each other impact a large number of species. For example, organisms that produce their offspring in seasonal environments must time their reproduction with the occurrence of food. Many bird species travel thousands of kilometers to their breeding grounds, from Africa to the Arctic, to find food. Yet, climate change impacts the timings of insect peaks differently from bird migration times, causing declines in the survival of birds’ offspring in the Arctic.

Many species’ distributions shift towards the poles as the climate warms. This not only delimits the distribution of many species, but also leads to competitive species expanding their range to previously dominated areas. Communities undergo changes as new species invade an area or as the abundance of local species decreases or increases due to climate changes. Some species would not survive with a competitor, while the loss of a species could allow another species’ populations to increase and thrive.

While species would need to migrate to survive, it is not obvious they can!

✨Ambrose Tjark is a Nigerian born dance/performance artist and choreographer. A fashion stylist/designer, art enthusiast and community organizer.

✨Ambrose is a founding member of Westsyde Lifestyle, a major propagator of the Afro Urban kulture.

✨He regularly shares his knowledge and vision of Naija street dance style specifically. His vigorous yet sublime movements originates from the Nigerian “Konto” and ‘shaku’ dance fusion- his key components are a mix of Hip pop, afro Caribbean, Afro; free movement, contemporary representation and afro oriented similarities, lyrical expression and unorthodox sound representation.

✨His work has been featured in the critically acclaimed production, Re:incarnation from Qudus Onikeku/QDance Company. Ambrose toured with the company 2020-2021 World Tour and now currently on tour with Oulouy’’s Afrikan Party’ produced by Africa Moment based in Barcelona, Spain as performer, stylist and costumier.

✨He also functioned as a curator, co-organizer, content creator, and performer for international festivals as a collaborator like GREG festival 2020, Oyofe Festival 2022, AFRO BOOM 2023 Russia and has worked with UK artist SKEPTA, MAJOR LAZER, WIZKID, etc in co-choreography and culture influencing efforts
